Everton will be without Darron Gibson for the visit of Newcastle after he was ruled out for up to five weeks with a thigh strain.

David Moyes will also be unable to use new signing Bryan Oviedo, as the Costa Rican has only just finalised his visa.

Newcastle are without keeper Tim Krul and Fabricio Coloccini who were injured in World Cup qualifiers last week.

Defenders Danny Simpson and Ryan Taylor, and midfielder Cheick Tiote, are also missing.

MATCH PREVIEW

Before these two sides met on the final day of last season Newcastle boss Alan Pardew claimed his club were operating in a different league to Everton.

The Toffees promptly inflicted a 3-1 defeat on the visitors to suggest that might not be an entirely accurate assessment.

But Everton boss David Moyes has refused to make any bold claims about the two sides' comparitive merits.

"People can say what they like in terms of where Everton are compared to Newcastle," he said.

"Alan and Newcastle did a really good job and deservedly have found themselves in Europe this year.

"I thought they did great last year as they kept it going when a lot of people thought they would fade away.

"For a long time they were very close to being a Champions League team. But we have been in strong positions. They finished above us last season. You are only as good as your last one and in the last one they did better than us. Over the years we've done pretty well with the resources we have available to us."

Newcastle will be keen to avoid a repeat of last season's display at Goodison and are looking to improve on a mixed start to the new campaign which has seen them garner a win, draw and defeat from their opening three games.

Defender Davide Santon said: "Last year we lost there, and so we know that Everton are a good team.

"But we will go to Everton not for a draw, not for a loss, but for a win. We will be positive."

Santon has established himself as Newcastle's first-choice left-back since arriving from Inter Milan last summer, but insists there is still room for improvement as he continues to adapt to English football.

"Last season, the first few months were difficult for me because Serie A and the Premier League is totally different," he said.

"But now I feel better on the pitch and more confident, so I am enjoying it. The fans have not seen the best of me yet though. I can still do more though I can be much better - and I will improve while I am here."
